Mur de l’atlantic is a very personal project that Julio has been working on for manys years now. Every time that he goes to visit his mom on the Atlantic Ocean coast in Brittany-France – where she lives – he paints a unique piece on a WWII bunker. There are many of these abandoned structures in the area, mostly on beaches. They’re really fascinating objects, as they look like they’re from some distant future-past. They’re monolithic, simple, they’re imbued with history and not only that of the WWII era, but also with their own. Some have aged well, others look destroyed and haunted.

This summer Julio drove out to one of these structures with his sister-in-law who’s also a painter and has been involved in this project over the years, and her 6 month old daughter. The car was packed to the brim with paint and painting supplies. The idea was to paint two walls: one with only white dots on it, the other in bold color. The latter is pictured here and was painted by Julio. As always, it was amazing to see this crude object transform into a lively sculpture. It was also great to see how random passerby’s reacted to the painting session: viewing it as a form of performance art. Till next summer and the next session!
