Together with our dear friend, Jim Avignon, we organized an exhibition entitled Halma. The concept for the show was based on the actual Halma board game; which we used to streamline our collaboration, by applying its rules to our creative processes. Thanks to this we could easily figure out which visual paths should be pursued and which should be abandoned, as we synchronized our styles.
The final show featured our collaborative paintings and a series of sculptures, which were inspired by the Halma pawns. In the end, we literally turned the space of Kunstverein Familie Montez, in Frankfurt, into one gigantic board game. The pawns could interact with each other and also with the audience. Stylistically, the work emphasized clean, geometric forms, which were displayed alongside wooden pieces that we collected on location. At the end, we realized that our work is kin to the costumes featured in Oskar Schlemmer’s Bauhaus piece, Triadic Ballet (1922).

In preparation for the show we met in our studio to prepare five big paintings that we painted in an intense process during a week in exchange with Jim. As we are already working in a team, Sebastian and I are already used to working together, but with a third person, and then painting on canvas, it was a great experience.

For Jim it was interesting, because he usually paints on paper and he has a very strict plan and set idea at the beginning, and then he just paints until it’s done. Our process of painting functions way differently. Sometimes we prepare a sketch or a plan, but most of the time we just get into the process and embrace the energy of the moment. We layer a lot when we paint, but we prepare the layering from the beginning on, because we work with masking whole areas to create certain surprises at the end. Jim had to get used to every single step and state of the process. It was a great exchange and I think, even though it was quite challenging, we all were very happy with the results. The process was very playful and totally t into the idea of our conception for the exhibition to work around the topic of the Halma game.

We also built a couple of interactive Installations at the exhibition space in Frankfurt. It was a strong working process during the exhibition build-up.

RESEARCH: We were researching within the rules of the game Halma. We also tried different painting techniques during the preparation process and did research about forms, and made a lot preparative drawings, that led us to the results.

PROCESS: As described in the first point – a lot of exchanging and debating during the process of painting, and following quite a strict plan of implementation during the exhibition build-up!

RESISTANCES: Being able to understand the collaborators point and trying to match ideas is always challenging. Being playful and experimental helps to ght resistances and blockades.

INSIGHT: It’s important to create rules, but it’s more impor- tant to be able break them, if necessary. Everyday Pizza doesn’t always help ;)

DISTRACTIONS: ... are needed from time to time to reboot and be able to create a certain tension within a painting.
